Nicaragua

ON OUR WAY TO CHRISTO RAY NICARAGUA

THE PROS

Nicaragua is known as the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes. This country is abundant in beauty offering lush vegetation, forests and magnificent beaches covered in dark sand caused by the active volcanic chain.
Most people are mestizos, or natives and Spanish combined. The merging of the cultures has created a lively, hospitable and warm people. Learn the history of this great nation, admire the magnificent architecture as you take a walk back in time winding through cobble stone streets, climbing volcanoes or swimming in crater lakes.  Whatever you choose, this country will enthrall you with its beauty and warmth.

THE CONS

Nicaragua is also the second poorest country in the hemisphere after Haiti. Half of the people in Nicaragua live in rural areas. 68% struggle to survive on little more than US$1 per day.

17% of rural households are managed by women, but only 15% of women hold title to land under their own names. Most rural women cultivate land that is not theirs.
Many families live on land where water is scarce. 80% of the rural poor depend on agriculture for their livelihood, causing a severe strain on the fragile environment.

VOLUNTEER

Saving The Hungry works in the largest landfill just outside of Managua. Over 10 000 families live off the garbage and many don’t have a roof over their head. Here we build homes and participate in the children’s feeding program. We also assist the local not for profit in building the new vocational training center where the men and woman from local barrios will learn construction, sewing and cooking and where 510 children receive a hot meal.

An average day runs from about 8 am to 4 pm and there will be a fair amount of physical labor involved. For those who would like to spend time with the children you will have an opportunity to do crafts, paint nails or play soccer. This is a wonderful way of show the kids the attention they so desperately need.

OUR  PARTNERSHIP

Our Nicaraguan partner is a Not For Profit founded in 2002.  Run by a husband and wife team from South Carolina in the US.  This couple gave up their comfortable North American lifestyle to serve the people of Nicaragua.
Their organisation exists to engage, equip and empower the people of Nicaragua.  They provide nutrition, housing, job training and discipleship to the locals.

Since 2002 they have initiated feeding programs for two (slums) These programs provide nutritious meals that help to alleviate diseases and complications of malnutrition.  Our feeding programs are focused on reaching children whose families are in extreme poverty and are unable to provide sufficient nutrition, both in Cristo Rey and Managua.  Their children's center not only provides meals, but gives essential care to at-risk children throughout the day.

In 2009 they began to work in Cristo Rey garbage dump.  Here over 10 000 families live in extreme poverty.  Many people lack the basic needs of shelter, water, and electricity.   Since starting the program they have built over 300 homes.
