THE PROS
Written by Lonely Planet (www.lonelyplanet.com/canada)
From dogsledding in the Northwest Territories to surfing in Tofino, from the history of Old Quebec to the vibrancy of multicultural Toronto, from breathtakingly empty prairie skies to the warm welcome on George St in St John's, from the thrill of skiing in the Rockies to the serenity of paddling past a moose in Algonquin Park - there is nowhere else on earth that offers the range of adventures that await you in Canada.
(Lonely Planet named Canada the best country in the world to visit in 2017)
THE CONS
Like any other country, ours has its problems. Over 30 000 Canadians are homeless on any given night. Sex trafficking is growing with over 25% of the victims being minors. 13% of Canadian’s will go to bed tonight on an empty stomach and hunger continues to be a growing concern in our great nation. Although Saving The Hungry has an international focus we also believe in supporting and working within the communities we live in. How can we make a different in the lives of those living in developing countries if we ignore the problems in our own backyard? If you are not connecting to a volunteering project, let us help match your needs with the needs of one of the many organisations making a difference to the lives of Canadians.
SUPPORT LOCAL
Floyd & Mel House
Our Canadian partnership is with Community Outreach YEG in Edmonton, Alberta. Operating as a non-profit, they rely solely on the generosity of donors and volunteers willing to invest their time.
The Nonprofit organization was started by Floyd and Mel House from their home who have a heart for those who find themselves living on the streets. They provide a healthy meal which they organize outside Hope City, downtown Edmonoton to feed the homeless. Floyd and Mel rely on volunteers and support from the communtiy and local businesses to donate in any way they can. From financial assistance to food, blankets, gloves, clothing, jackets, toques and gloves to get through the winters.
Their own words describe them as "We are just a group of ordinary people wanting to volunteer providing essential needs to the less fortunate community. We are committed to providing accessible, inclusive, and culturally competent services to diverse communities".
