What drives people to help others in need?
What is it that motivates Saving the Hungry travellers to help raise money through their friends, family, and associates; and then travel thousands of kilometers to unknown lands to help families they have never met? We asked and our top answers are below
To make a substantive and life-altering impact in this world.
Many of our travellers are “ true givers” who have contributed in many ways throughout their lives. Some of these “gifts” will have been monetary or in-kind through donations, and some will be time through assisting with a cause. The difference with Saving the Hungry is that are travellers get struck by how meaningful it is that their fundraising and then their efforts toward a build or project change real and in-person lives forever … in 3-4 days. Our people have changed others’ hope and the people who are recipients of that gift are right there to see the gift come to life.
To create clarity on what is important in your life.
Our travellers see how little others have and how in one example, what we would call a “garden shed”, saves lives and gives people new hope. A 10’ x 10’ home with a tin roof, tin sides, and a concrete floor in the Managua garbage dump area provides new hope and shelter for families. When our travellers use their hands to create this new hope for a family in need, something great happens to their hearts and souls.
To immerse yourself in and appreciate other communities and cultures.
When we all go on a regular vacation, most of us travel the same paths that many other “tourists” have travelled. When you travel and volunteer with us, you get the “inside story”. You volunteer where people need us the most, in places that tourists would rarely see. And since we have relationships with local partners, they take us to the inside of the cultures and teach us all about where we are … with trusted friends. You get immersed. (Watch out, you may fall in love with the country and the kids!)
To enhance connection with your travel partner(s) and/or make meaningful connections with new friends.
When you travel with us, you will meet like-minded people who have a giving heart. You will meet new friends that also want to contribute to a bigger purpose. Our trips have also brought couples closer together, mothers and fathers closer together with their children, and friends closer together. Going abroad on our trips brings greater meaning to being together.
To have fun and feel fulfilled.
We will continue to show you our videos and photos with all the smiles and laughs! One of our travellers said: “I have not contributed to something so special in a long time and also never laughed so much!” We are fun people who enjoy life. Not only will you have fun on the vacation part of the journey, but the fun will also be on the worksites.
To put your skills to good use.
Whether you a handyperson, a trained tradesperson, a person who likes to paint the house, a people connector, a photo/video aficionado, a host or hostess, even a great joke-teller … our trips are a great place to use your skills and learn more. Who would have known how you must get it exactly right when you are mixing cement the simple way! Watch our 2018 South Africa team in action below
To challenge yourself.
Our travellers tell us that that they wanted to “spark” their lives a bit, do something different. There is a yearning to do something more, for someone else. Our trips are an opportunity for you to challenge yourself. To go somewhere to see something you may never see on your own. And with your own hands, transform lives!
Honduras 2020 Update.
We are busy preparing the itinerary and making the connections for Honduras 2021. Since our last newsletter, the Alberta vaccine program has changed quite dramatically, for the positive. It appears now that Albertans will all have an opportunity to be vaccinated by the fall season. And … if you are over 45 years old, sounds like you may have the opportunity to be vaccinated by this summer.
If the Alberta vaccination program continues to go "as advertised", Honduras in November is certainly on track.
Connect with us if you may be interested. No obligation at all!
Let us know if you are interested in a trip!
We are building up our database to communicate regularly with previous Saving the Hungry travellers and new prospective travellers. There is no obligation at all, we just need to start to form a group of interested people for Honduras and/or our other upcoming adventures. Once we see clarity on when exactly we can travel again, we will start to formalize a group to go to Honduras. Contact Nigel or Wade through email or phone. Our contact information is below.
